Slightly Ribbed Mitts
Materials Used:
1 skein Berroco Ultra Alpaca light (or comparable DK weight yarn) [144 yds per skein - I had quite a bit left over, and I am fairly wasteful when it comes to leaving realllly long tails at cast on and bind off.]
US 6 DPNS (or circulars if you prefer Magic Loop knitting)
US 4 DPNS (or circulars if you prefer Magic Loop knitting)
Need this in PDF format?
Needles sizes are what I used; you will want to adjust needle size for gauge.
Finished project size: 6″ tall, circumference of 5″.
(Note: This is the second revision of this pattern. Main change: type of increase at the gusset.)
LTCO 44 on US 6. Transfer stitches to US 4 dpns (3) –> (16, 12, 16)
9 rounds K1, P1 ribbing on US 4 (approx. 1″ of ribbing)
With US 6, begin new ribbing pattern:
*K2, P1, K2, P1, K9, P1, K2, P1, K2, P1*
22 rounds of ribbing pattern. (To make the gloves longer, add more rounds of the ribbing pattern here.)
Begin gusset increases.
R1: ribbing pattern to last 3 stitches of first repeat: kfb, k, P1, kfb, ribbing pattern to end.
R2: knit / purl stitches as they appear.
Repeat rounds 1 & 2 until gusset has been increased by a total of 12 stitches (5 more times).
Thumb stitches: knit to gusset increases. Place the next 13 stitches on waste yarn. Cast on 1 extra stitch. Knit / purl as the stitches appear.
Knit in ribbing pattern, purling the cast on stitch to maintain pattern integrity. Repeat ribbing pattern 5 more times.
With US 4s, 6 rounds of K1, P1 ribbing. Cast off (stretchy).
Thumb:
Pick up and knit a total of 16 stitches, including the stitches resting on the waste yarn. If you are worried about there being the usual gaps in your thumb placement, you can pick up two extra stitches and decrease then in the first round of ribbing. Choice of needle size is entirely up to you. If you prefer a tighter thumb “tube,” use the US4s (or the smaller needles you used previously). If, like me, you prefer a looser thumb tube, use the larger needles. K1P1 ribbing for 5 rounds. Cast off (stretchy).
Repeat for second glove.
Variation(s):
Instead of the normal ribbing pattern, change the pattern to:
Row 1: *K2, P1, K2, P1, K9, P1, K2, P1, K2, P1*
Row 2: *K2, P1, RT, P1, K9, P1, RT, P1, K2, P1*
